Dr. Jeffrey Pierce

Biography

Jeff is a Professor of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. He has extensive experience working with NASA satellite products, particularly regarding aerosols. His group works regularly with epidemiologists, economists, and communication scientists, to understand and quantify pollution health and societal impacts. Dr. Pierce is also an expert on air pollution modeling and is a co-chair of the aerosols working group on the steering committee for the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model. HAQAST Project: Leveraging satellites and low-cost monitors to strengthen air pollution and health decision making in under-monitored regions Jeff’s team will focus on using satellites and low-cost monitors to understand pollution exposure in rural, under-monitored regions. These regions face pollution threats (dust, wild-/prescribed-fire smoke, ammonia) that are not well-measured by our existing regulatory monitoring networks. The overall objective is to help stakeholders assess pollutant exposure and health impacts/threats in these rural and under-monitored regions, building on existing activities and collaborations. This project will focus on dust, particulate matter, ozone and ammonia, using PM2.5 from ground level EPA monitors, low-cost PurpleAir monitors, as well as GOES, VIIRS, TEMPO and CrIS satellite data. Project goals / deliverables:
  1. Update national smoke PM2.5 product and refine regionally
  2. Develop dust/PM2.5 product
  3. Combine TEMPO with monitor ozone data
  4. Integrate satellite data with health records and perform health assessments for stakeholder needs
